Workshop at Ludington State Park 2023

The Silver Lake Sand Dunes are home to many good times and great memories for thousands of people. You can feel the energy that the bustling atmosphere produces. If you wander long enough, you can find areas on the dunes that look as if they have been untouched by humans for hundreds of years. When I was photographing this scene I was amazed at the apparent lack of human presence. It was not until I gave this photograph to my grandma, Bev Marble, for Christmas, that I was aware of the litter present in the scene.

Heaven on Hamlin Lake Workshop

Climbing to the top of the dune behind Big Sable Point Lighthouse, I am out of breath but have no time to lose. The clouds and color look nice and a northbound freighter is passing by. I work quickly to fine tune my camera position, set up the tripod, get the horizon line straight and shoot. F3.5 at 1/60, ISO 100, 14-24mm lens at 16mm

Cruising Lake Michigan

Everyone loves seeing apple blossoms decorate the countryside of the Lake Michigan shoreline counties in springtime, but I am among the many who get just as excited to see the apple trees loaded with apples ready for harvest at the end of summer and during fall.

My dad and I always look to put S-curves into our compositions. Tonight while shooting inside the Ludington channel, I noticed an S-curve that kept appearing on the water surface. I waited till the light got lower in the sky and made this photo. F2.8 at 1/100, ISO 800, 70-200 mm lens at 98 mm

I admire the craftsmanship and the beauty of Jeff LaPrad's wooden vessel as it sails past me onto Lake Michigan into another spectacular Ludington sunset. I have seen the handmade sailboat before and longed to be able to photograph it closer to my vantage point. Tonight I am on the end of the South Breakwater and the view is picture perfect. F3.2 at 1/800, ISO 400, 80-200 mm at 200 mm

Nothing pops out of the countryside more than bright red Michigan tart cherries. They are so bright and shiny they glow in the daylight. I never get tired of taking photographic road trips through the orchard country of Michigan's West Shore counties.

The carferry Badger makes the turn to head out of Ludington harbor on a summer evening.

Everyone aboard Sean McDonald's charter fishing boat Katch Me got to enjoy this beautiful sunrise on Lake Michigan today. The anticipation of reeling in a giant king salmon was as electric as the beautiful colors in the sunrise. F9 at 1/2500, ISO 6400, 18-50mm lens at 18mm
